Bank reconciliations work best if you work them monthly. You can do larger time periods, but it becomes more difficult to chase down issues. Monthly reconciliations allow you to keep on top of any issues you might find.
You must always do your reconciliations chronologically. If you break from doing things in order, then you run the risk of a reconciliation that will not work. Even if you fall behind, continue to work on them monthly, in chronological order. It actually goes by quite quickly once you get yourself into a groove!
