Does anyone know if Alberta farms are required to pay their employees vacation pay? It looks like we are not required to do so based on the info I found elsewhere online, but some discussion came up today regarding this issue @ my agexpert training.
Hey Danielle. I think that may be a bit of a "yes and no" situation. Generally in Canada, most agriculture production businesses are exempt from labour rules like vacation pay. That said, I have talked with some farms in the last few years that have been required to follow the Act just like any other employer. I would recommend speaking with your accountant or legal counsel at the next meeting you have with them and in the meantime, contact your provincial labour standards office and ask them the question, being sure to describe your business. In Alberta you can call 1-877-427-3731 or submit a question online (link below). They have staff there that address questions like this on a case-by-case basis. I've sent them an email this morning to see if they can offer us any general clarification around the rules in Alberta and will post what I hear back from them.
